DOOM for ALL

I know it's been too long. Sometimes I'm gravy and other times I'm tar. What can I say that you can't say. Hmmm? Hmmm? Nothing.

We've been busy...so much on our collective plate lately. We had a kick ass art opening for OhNo!Doom. It was fabulous! Those are some seriously talented gentlemen. Come by the shop and check out their wares. All Doom will be up through May 2nd. Check it out before it's gone.

What else.. Oh yeah, my favorite event of the whole darn year. Fly Bird's Anniversary Party! This youngster is turning 4! Our little Bird is dressing itself and has an imaginary friend- and wants to share birthday joy with you. Stop by the shop on Friday May 2nd from 6-10 pm for some seriously fun times- and 25% OFF Of Your Entire Purchase! Everyone saves big at a Bird Bash. That's our rule.

Finally, J and a new Bird friend that we like to call "The Peanut" or "Lee" for short, have been collaborating on (talking loads of smack) and a Craft Fair the likes of which you have not seen before. They call it CONSTRUCTOR and it is going to knock the socks off of the western suburbs. This bad boy will be held at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn on Sunday, May 25th from 12-8pm. It's about bad-ass handmade merch, some good food, atmosphere to die for, and a beer or two if you are so inclined. For more info see the site.

More to come as the days go by.. Enjoy this warm(er) weather, Chicago.

Flesh Eating Bacteria

This week we are getting ready for the OhNo!Doom art opening on 3/29. It is going to be so great! Be here, people. We are getting the store all gussied up for the show the New York Times may call "The art event of the season". Vittles will be served- Fly Bird merchandise will be discounted (by 10% -heck yeah!) and J may well be wearing a skirt. It is an opportunity you will simply be ashamed of if you miss. Don't let that happen. Don't.

Otherwise we're chillin' and enjoying this beautiful day. I believe it's 59 degrees on the thermostat- and that means Spring! People are out and walking. They check out our front windows and the one item they laugh at time and time again, is "The Complete Manual of Things That Might Kill You; a guide to self-diagnosis for hypochondriacs". Some folks took a picture of it through the window the other day while snickering. It is pretty funny- and interesting (you should see the illustrations) so I think I will put it on the site. Look for it soon. Until then- come on by the shop to check it- and our other fabulous gift items- out.

Oh, and by the way- if you have boils... you might have Bubonic Plague. Just so you know.

It's Called Art, Baby.

Art- and damn good design. We love it here at The Bird. Which is why we are delving deeper into one of our favorite fun-time events- the ever-lovin' art show. On March 29th we will be opening up our next show for OhNo!Doom a kick ass art/design collective out of Logan Square. These 5 gents have some talent that we just plain have to share with you all. So... stop by from 7-11 on 3/29 for the opening to have a few snacks, maybe a drink or two, and- as an added bonus- 10% off of all FB merch during the show. Now you have no reason not to show up!
We will see you there.

*The OhNo!Doom show will be up through the end of April*

International Women's Day

On Saturday, March 8th Fly Bird will be celebrating International Women's Day by donating 5% of our daily profits to CARE.

CARE is part of a global movement to empower women to fight against poverty by addressing its underlying causes- lack of education, health needs, economic opportunity and emergency care. We here at Fly Bird believe in CARE's work- and want to share the opportunity of supporting such a worthwhile organization with our fabulous customers.

So... please join us on March 8th from 10-6pm to pick up some great gifts - enjoy the high of giving- and contemplate the reality of doing a good thing for people who need your support.

We appreciate it!

Kate & Julia

And don't forget that
Shawnimals are here! Pick up a pocket stache ($7) or a pocket wee ninja ($10) on 3/8 for your own self- and give something to the people of the world at the same time. What could possibly be better than that, we ask?

Yelp it up.

The Bird is on Yelp! Have you heard of it? It's a business reviewing site that let's you check out shops/restaurants/spas etc. in your neighborhood and tell the world what you think of them. We think it's pretty cool. It's open and free- a great way to get info on new places, and to tell folks who may not know how fantastic a particular gift shop is (Wink. Nudge.) Check it out here.

Fly Bird

And, while I'm at it, I may as well tell you about another outstanding place I visit online. It's the genre X site that my fabulous book club has created. J and I go once a month to a bar in the area that some super cool O.P. librarians have christened as the rendezvous point for this gathering. If you like beer, books and fun smart people you should really check it out. We will be at Molly Malone's discussing The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem on Tuesday March 25th for our next meeting of the minds. Heck, J and I are all over this book club- so you know it's the bees knees. Click on to their site and see what you think.

Paper Bounty

Another Sunday and I sit in front of the computer wondering what to write to you all about. One sad thing fo sho is that Missy's last day will be Monday. We will miss her. She has been such a big help over the last couple of months. It will be a different bird without her.

On a product note- we have recently been enjoying the pleasure of a new card line. La Familia Green, a local Chicago stationary set, has agreed to share their paper bounty with us. We received our first shipment pre V-day and s0 far they have been a "great success". We can't wait to share them with you. I will be adding a couple of my favorites to the site in the next few weeks- keep on guard for that. For now, I'll throw up a some images to whet your appetites. The Luchador cards have been especially banko popluar- but really, everything they touch turns into cardstock gold.

Enjoy the week. Send your love out to M.

Love 4 Sale (No, not THAT kind of love, Brian & Tina.)

Ahhh V-day and it's many warm joys. The time for a cute pink card is upon us- and Fly Bird doesn't want you spending your dough on some computer generated lame as hell 3rd rate card. We don't. That's why we have a plethora of pretty great cards for you to purchase for that special someone. Cards that say, "Hey- I've got some fantastic taste- and this rad card shows that you mean more to me than some hazy photo of roses and a dumb poem."

And... now through "The Day" itself- February 14th- you can save 20% off of your entire purchase at the Bird! Pick up a sweet soy candle, some sugar scrub, a Gun Vase (V-day staples, for sure) and have money to spare for that sexy trip to Sybaris. . Just type "VAL08" in the comment field of your online order- or come on in and mention this blog. Julia and Missy have created an atmosphere of pink and red delight with their sewing skills that you really should see before it comes down on love day.

Here's a sample of The Bird offerings for those lovely lads or ladies in you life... Check it out, let it inspire you to purchase more than a box Fannie May, and get in here.

XOXO
